According to the Economic Times, the Government of India and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology are considering developing their own smartphone operating system to compete with Android and iOS.
Government officials are looking for startups and academic institutions interested in participating in this course. Secretary of State for Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar believes there is ample room for other OSs to exist, so a policy is underway to begin development.

Large corporations such as Samsung, BlackBerry, Palm, and Microsoft have made numerous attempts to develop competing operating systems, but all have failed. Currently, the only competitor is Huawei's HarmonyOS.
