What is primary memory | All about primary memory - Tech Deals

 What Does Primary Memory Mean?

Primary memory is a computer memory processor or computer that is accessed directly or directly. Allows the processor to access running applications and services cached somewhere.


Primary memory is also known as primary storage or primary memory.

The Primary memory is a flexible computer system backup. It can be random access memory (RAM), cache memory or data buses, but it is primarily associated with RAM.

As soon as the computer starts up, the Primary memory is loading all running applications, including the basic operating system (OS), user interaction with any user and installed software application. An open memory application / application works with the system processor to perform all the application-specific tasks.

Primary memory is considered faster than secondary memory.


The need for primary memory

In order to improve system efficiency, memory is organized in such a way that the access time of the correct process is reduced. The following procedure is followed to reduce the access time of the correct procedure.

All programs, files, and data are stored on a second-largest storage and have greater access time.

Secondary memory cannot be directly accessed via a CPU or processor.

In order to, to perform any operating system the system loads the process into a small core memory that is not directly accessible by the CPU.

Since only those processes are loaded into the Primary memory ready to use, the CPU can access those processes efficiently and this improves system performance.

This slow-moving memory movement is known as the Memory Hierarchy.


Separation of Primary Memory

Primary memory can be broadly divided into two categories:


🔰 Read-only memory (ROM)

🔰 Random access memory (RAM)


Read only memory

Any data that does not need to be changed is stored in the ROM. The ROM combines those programs that run the program (known as the bootstrap program that launches the OS) as well as data-like algorithm required by the OS. Anything stored in ROM cannot be changed or altered.


ROM Types:

ROM can be broadly divided into 4 types according to their behavior:


⚜️ MROM: Masked ROM is hardwired and pre-programmed ROM. Any content that has been posted cannot be modified in any way.

⚜️ PROM: Fixed ROM can be changed once by the user. The user buys an empty PROM and writes the content they want but the written content cannot be changed.

⚜️ EPROM: Pure and Organic ROM Content can be modified by deleting the original content that can be done by exposing EPROM to UV rays. This exposure to ultra-violet light disperses the charge on the ROM and the content can be rewritten on it.

⚜️ EEPROM: Electronic and Organic ROM Content can be replaced by deleting original content that can be easily erased electronically. However, one byte can be deleted at a time instead of deleting one at a time. Therefore, the reorganization of EEPROM is a slow process.


Random access memory (RAM)

Any process in the system that needs to be done is loaded into RAM processed by the CPU As instructed in the system. Like when we click on apps like Browser, first the Browser code will be loaded with the Operating System RAM and then the CPU will uninstall and open the Browser.

RAM types:

RAM can be broadly divided into SRAM (static RAM) and DRAM (Dynamic RAM) based on its behavior:


⚜️ DRAM: Dynamic RAM or DRAM needs periodic updates for a few milliseconds to store data. DRAM is made up of capacitors and transistors as well as leakage of electrical charger from capacitors and DRAM needs to be charged from time to time. DRAM is widely used on home PCs and servers as it is cheaper than SRAM.


⚜️ SRAM: Stable RAM or SRAM stores data as long as power is supplied to the system. SRAM uses successive circuits such as flip-flop to keep it slow so it does not need to be updated from time to time. SRAM is expensive so it is only used when speed is very important.


Is Primary Memory evolving naturally?

The contents of the Primary memory may disappear or disappear when the power is depleted depending on whether it is stored in RAM or ROM.

ROM content does not change naturally, stored or lost power.

RAM content fluctuates naturally, disappearing when exhausted.


Where is the cache memory?

Data on the Primary memory can be accessed faster than the secondary memory but still, the memory times of the Primary memory are usually a few microseconds, while the CPU is capable of performing tasks in nanoseconds. Due to the reduction in data access time and operating system data performance decreases as the CPU can be used efficiently, it may remain idle for some time. To reduce this time gap a new part of Memory is introduced known as Cache Memory.
